Stokes Bay Summerfest 2005

On Saturday, July 23, 2005 another perfect day happened in Stokes Bay... the 7th Annual
Summerfest. The day started at 7:30 a.m. with Bob Zavitz and is posse of cooks serving up one of
their special “Breakfast-on-a-Bun” treats and then the Yard Sale 8:00 a.m.
Centre the Penny Table was set and ready to go, the search and rescue kids game was set to
take off also. The Super Bus arrived and got all the children excited about its’ arrival, the Fire Dept.
were setting up the “crash” car, the O.P.P. rollover car was preparing for its’ demonstration, and the
children were getting ready for the grand parade at 11:00 a.m.
the sight for the 3rd annual SoapBox Derby. The road was closed by the O.P.P., the vehicles
were in position and the race was on. After a number of races, trophies and prizes were awarded to
the winners. In the 9-12 yrs group 1st place went to Boyd and Noah McLay, 2nd place went to Micah
& Elijah Marcella, and 3rd place went to John & Brandy Nuis all of Stokes Bay. In the 13 to 16 yrs
group 1st place went to Charlene Zamostny & Travis Sloane and 2nd place went to Taylor Edwards
& his friend Jordie. Honourable mention goes to Georgia & Rachel McLay of Stokes Bay who also
won the coveted “Peoples Choice” award on Friday night at the Stokes Bay Kruz night held at the
General Stores every Friday night during the summer. Honourable mention also goes to Zach &
Allison Mielhausen, Lloyd & Mathew Smith and Casandra Bridge & Josie Mielhausen who entered
this year for the ist time. Hopefully they will come out again next year and give the winners a run for
their money.
Now, it was back to the Community Centre where Bob and his posse had switched from
breakfast to lunch mode with an array of hamburgs, hot dogs and sausages on a bun. French fries and
pogo’s were also available inside from Mary Dale & Mary Robbins. The Penny Table was a-buzz with
activity and so was the sale of the Specialty Draw tickets. Meanwhile outside there was the Treasure
Hunt going on with their very own Pirate Jim. Then the Amazing Race was off and running with the
contestants following clues for prizes all over Stokes Bay. Winners of the Amazing Race were Kevin
& K.C. McArthur. Melinda Spaulding did a great job organizing the Treasure Hunt and Amazing
Race. Cheryl Liverance helped organize the log slab maze as well as the search and retrieve game.
Sarah & Sasha Collins ran the baseball and bean bag toss, where the kids got to enter their name to
win a $25.00 Gift Cert. Donated by Wal-Mart.
The local live entertainment arrived by 2:00 p.m. These musicians donate their time and talent
to provide listening enjoyment in the pavilion for the afternoon. This year’s entertainers were Holly
McLay, Don Edgar, John Baker, Jim Risdale, Alex Petroff, Kent Hewton and Jan Menkal. Mr.
Menkal is the Past President of the Canadian Guitar Association. Jan accepts donations of
broken/used etc. guitars, repairs them and sends them off to underprivilege children in the arctic
region. It is a pleasure to have so many talented people to listen to.
$30.00 of nickels donated by Joyce & Chuck Haskett and Bob Smith of Stokes Bay. The kids
had a great time finding them in the sawdust. The first ones to dig were the 2 to 4 year olds, then 5
to 8 year olds, then it was a free-for-all. In the midst of all the digging 2 fifty cent pieces were tossed
in, just to make it interesting. While everyone enjoyed themselves digging for the nickels, they also
received a stuffed toy for being good participants. Thanks to Liverance Lumber for the donation of
the sawdust.
Table and Specialty Draw. Nean McArthur won the Wooden Blanket Box donated by Larry
Reay of the Durham Furniture Co. Darcy Layne, won the Log Cabin Bird Feeder donated by Harold
Harmer of Lion’s Head and Ann Smith won our misc. draw of the wooden lawn chair donated by
School House Creations Hwy. 6 north Miller Lake. The children’s winner of the $25.00 Gift Cert.
Donated by Wal-Mart was Emily Lancaster, and the winner of the original oil painting done by our
local artist from Heron Point Trailer Park,Tom Sullivan, was Kayla Clarke. Congratulations to
everyone.
At 5 p.m. it was announced that supper was ready and a Cold Buffet roast beef and roast pork,
accompanied by a very large assortment of salads and donated desserts was served. By 8 p.m.
everyone was ready for the dance. The Youth dance and Karioke was provided by Elaine Scott and
her brother Tim inside the Community Centre while the Red Rascal Band from Hanover took over
the pavilion outside for an evening of music and dancing. The day was topped off at 11 p.m. with a
light lunch and the drawing of the Cash Draw. The 1st prize of $500.00 was awarded to Bruce Holme
of Stokes Bay, 2nd prize of $300.00 was awarded to Shirley Adams of Miller Lake and 3rd prize was
awarded to Orville Stewart of Stokes Bay.
The Stokes Bay Community Centre would like to thank everyone who helped throughout the
day, all the generous businesses and people who donated various prizes, music and entertainment, and
most importantly, THEIR TIME.
